Objectives

  • Understand and define the basic elements of the communication process. Be able to define and discuss age-related changes in communication among the elderly. Be able to recognize and define the different types of disease and disability that may affect geriatric patient’s ability to communicate effectively. List and explain the different interventions that can be used to improve communication.
  • Understand the different types of Diabetes and how the disease affects the body. Identify signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia & hyperglycemia and aspects of emergency treatment plans. Identify elements of a proper nutrition plan for the patient with diabetes.
  • Understand the importance of and be able to verbalize methods to prevent and treat diabetic foot ulcers. Identify signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia & hyperglycemia and emergency treatment plans. Identify elements of a proper nutrition plan and other dietary concerns. Identify comorbidities that make diabetes care more challenging. Identify key elements of a “good” diabetes care plan.
